After Mr Connacher's death in 1903, the Birkenhead Institute presented an annual prize for English called "The Connacher Memorial Prize for English".
I am fortunate to have in my possession a book which is the first prize for English awarded at Christmas, 1889.
As can be seen below, the prize was a book called:
"The Newcomes", awarded to J.A. Stevens, Form IV B.
This was awarded at Christmas 1889 by Mr W.S. Connacher, who has signed the dedication inside the front cover. Pictures of the prize book are shown below, including the front cover, which is embossed in gold letters with the Birkenhead Institute school motto "Doctus in se semper divitias habet".
